Job Title:                    RN - Staff Nurse    


Reports to:                 Director of Nursing     



General Summary:   The RN is under the direction of the Medical Director and is responsible for nursing duties relating to clients under her care. The nurse is part of a team, which serves residential clients; clients who are on opioid detox or opioid maintenance and MICA detox.   




Qualifications:           The RN must have current and valid registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey and must possess knowledge of the principles, procedures and methods of professional nursing practices. Good interpersonal skills are essential.





Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities:




  1. 1.      Receive telephone inquiries concerning information about alcoholism and drug abuse treatment and make appropriate referrals.
  2. 2.      Answer inquiries concerning Facility’s services, admissions and disseminate all pertinent information to the prospective client, family or referral sources.
  3. 3.      Interview clients upon admission and obtain clients’ medical and substance abuse history.
  4. 4.      Collect all fees and insurance data and forward to appropriate staff.
  5. 5.      Enter the nursing portion of the client plan of care, in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures
  6. 6.      Dispense medication as per individual physician orders and maintain accurate records of same
  7. 7.      Assist the Medical Director by preparing all charts and equipment; correctly labeling all blood work; and carrying out all physician’s orders
  8. 8.      Observe client’s needs, document, and report all unusual mental or physical reactions to the Medical Director/Physician, Director of Health Services and Program Director
  9. 9.      Interpret physician’s medication orders and log appropriate dosage
  10. 10.  Ensure that medication supply is maintained
  11. 11.  Follow the physician’s written orders and assist with clients’ physical examinations, medical care and/or procedures, and client intakes
  12. 12.  Prepare and maintain adequate medical and other records
  13. 13.  Participate in the interpretation of medical treatment to the client and to the family as necessary
  14. 14.  Supervise the collection of blood and urine specimens; forward specimens to the laboratory; and document results of same
  15. 15.  Count control medications and record.
  16. 16.  Maintain par levels on all stock medications.
  17. 17.  Maintain daily syringe count on a 24-hour basis.
  18. 18.  Maintaining documentation in nurse’s notes.
  19. 19.  Attending all scheduled nurse’s meetings and in-services.
  20. 20.  Interview clients upon admission, obtaining information on medical history and substance abuse history for RN assessment notes.
  21. 21.  Participate in discharge planning (of clients) in conjunction with counseling staff.
  22. 22.  Increase his/her knowledge of treatment and client issues by attending and participating in staff development in-service sessions and the orientation process
  23. 23.  Respond to calls for take-home medication






General Responsibilities and Duties:




  1. 1.      Workweek will consist of five days per week with a minimum of eight hours work per day including one hour for lunch or 30 minutes for lunch and two 15 minute breaks.
  2. 2.      Punch in/out on the employee hand recognition time clock and ensure that all staff on unit follows this procedure.
  3. 3.      Notify supervisor, prior to shift if unable to work due to sickness or personal emergency.
  4. 4.      Submit Employee Absence Report to supervisor on day of return to work after taking on or more sick day(s).
  5. 5.      Know and enforce Straight & Narrow’s Policies and Procedures.
  6. 6.      Ensure Policy and Procedure for Critical Incident Reporting is followed when indicated.
  7. 7.      Complete all Straight & Narrow’s annually required trainings for staff.
  8. 8.      Attend in-service and other trainings, staff meetings and supervision as scheduled.
  9. 9.      Attend all meetings of CQI subcommittees of which you are a member and actively participate.
  10. 10.  Take responsibility for keeping Personnel file updated with regard to filing any new degrees or certificates, getting immunizations/medical test as required and keeping any licenses and/or certificates current.
  11. 11.  Perform other tasks as necessary or as assigned by a member of Straight & Narrow’s Administration.
